Interior Painting FAQs
What is the average cost to paint a house interior?
A general rule is to expect between $2 – $5 per square foot of painted surface. This can vary widely due to paint material (application or quality), surface preparation, location, etc…
What is the best interior paint?
The “best” can be subjective or dependent on application but many professional painting contractors, like Accent Painting, use Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore. Often the quality (and reflected cost) of paint is determined by its composition and grade of resins, pigments, solvents, and other additives used.
What color should I paint interior walls?
Colors may pivot on the type of room, lighting, or its use and traffic. Whites, grays, and beige colors are most versatile and easiest to coordinate around. Bolder colors like reds and oranges bring character and warmth but can darken rooms or look too aggressive. Blues and greens are more serene and can look fresh or institutional based on your preference.
How often should you paint a house interior?
The average is about 5 years. Homeowners often repaint to change the “theme” or palette of a room vs just freshening up the surface with the same color. Textured walls can often begin looking dull or dingy sooner due to dust particulates landing on the top edge of each imperfection.
What is the best finish/sheen for interior walls?
Sheen, like color, is a matter of preference but there are some guideposts to consider. Matte and Flat finishes absorb light making rooms feel darker but give a modern look. They can also be difficult to clean. Eggshell and Satin are the most common due to their blend of gentle reflective properties and easier cleaning. Semi-gloss and high-gloss are “wet” looking, and though the easiest to clean, will create significant glare.
How much value does interior painting add to a home?
Interior painting typically adds more value than exterior painting but the exact value added depends largely on perceived value from the buyer, the chosen colors, and the number of surfaces painted. Homeowners often repaint just before selling their home to create a fresher, cleaner, look instantly to appeal to prospective buyers.
Can you use interior paint outside?
We don’t make the rules but we recommend using interior paint for interior surfaces only. Exterior paint contains softer resins to allow for greater flexibility to resist moisture, freeze and thaw cycles, UV breakdown, and cracking. Conversely, interior paint has harder resins that create a scuff and scrape resistant shell that’s also easier to clean.
How long does it take interior paint to dry?
A freshly painted interior surface tends to dry to the touch in 2 – 3 hours. Setting up fans to speed up the drying time is common. Curing, however, can take 24 hours or longer depending on temperature, humidity, and airflow. Allowing the paint to “cure” fully ensures it’s effectively bonded to the surface and offers the best durability.
